Coursework is a term used to describe any work assigned to a student to be finished outside of regular class time. Coursework can cover a wide variety of activities including research, discussion, writing, report writing, problem solving, simulations, or experiments. Coursework is typically assigned to broaden student understanding of a subject and/or to help them hone a particular skill. It also may be assigned in order to assess the capacity of a student to apply classroom knowledge to a real-world situation, or to measure metacognitive skills such as self-reflection, critical thinking, and problem solving. Coursework may be either structured or unstructured, and it is designed to deepen the student's knowledge and/or practice a particular skill. It is commonly used in primary, secondary, and tertiary education. Coursework allows students to explore a particular aspect of a subject in depth and to apply what they have learned in the classroom to different environments. Coursework also allows for hands-on learning and encourages students to think creatively, which can help to prepare them for future educational and/or career opportunities.
