Lachit Borphukan was a heroic personality from Assam who is remembered for his role in defeating Mughal forces during the Battle of Saraighat in 1671. Born in a Tai-Ahom family in 1622, Lachit was the son of Momai Tamuli Borbarua- the commander of the Ahom army and had gained immense military expertise through rigorous training. In spite of being a nobleman, he was known for his humility and respect for others in society.
In 1671, the Mughals had invaded Assam under the command of Aurangzeb’s general, Ram Singh. Lachit was given the responsibility of leading the Ahom army to battle and was made commander-in-chief. He used his military expertise and strategic planning to great effect, leading to this momentous victory. He set aside conventional warfare and instead used guerilla warfare to benefit his own forces. He ensured that his troops had minimal casualties while increasing casualties among the Mughal forces.
However, the battle has also come to represent the strength of the Ahom kingdom and the fight that the Ahom people put up against the Mughals. It has even become a symbol of the Assamese community and their determination to resist foreign invaders. Lachit became a symbol of Assamese pride and continues to be a source of inspiration to this day. He is seen as a martyr who sacrificed his life to uphold the Assamese values and fight against powerful forces.
Lachit Borphukan’s contribution to the Assamese community has been remembered and celebrated for centuries. He is considered a hero in the region and monuments and memorials have been built in his honour. His bravery and courage in the face of a mighty enemy has made him an example for generations of Assamese leaders to come. He is remembered as a true warrior who never faltered in his commitment to his people.
