Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated on 2nd October every year to honour the birth of one of the greatest leader of India, Mahatma Gandhi who was instrumental in leading the country to freedom. The day is celebrated as a national holiday all over India. Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence, truth and service to humanity or ahimsa, satyagraha and swaraj is widely followed to this day in India and many other parts of the world. Schools and colleges in India organise special functions and celebrations to mark this day. Many organisations also pay tribute to Gandhi Ji by taking out marches and rallies. This day also reminds us of the sacrifices made by him in the liberation of India from the oppressive British Rule. It also serves as a reminder of his contribution to the freedom movement, India's struggle for Independence and his teachings of non-violence and Indian values of truth and simplicity. On this day, we should all try to follow his ideals of national unity, harmony, peace and non-violence which still serve as a great inspiration to humankind. This day is also an opportunity to reflect on our nation's progress and the lessons we can learn from our freedom struggle and take it forward in the era of present day.
