Gallantry award winners are some of the most inspirational and heroic individuals in society. These brave men and women have served and endured in extreme situations, often at risk of their own lives, to save others around them. Kettles singlehandedly evacuated 44 stranded soldiers after leading them through the face of relentless enemy fire. War had taken its toll on Kettles, who stated “I’d heard my share of this type of thing in my career and I figured there wasn’t anything else to do but to do what I could for those poor folks, the best way I knew how”. It is this sense of responsibility and sense of selflessness, although occurring under dire conditions, that truly makes these gallantry awardees special.
All in all, gallantry award winners have been a constant source of inspiration and courage. They represent ideals of bravery, duty, and courage in the face of extreme danger to save those they never knew.
