A pictorial essay is an artistic form of writing whereby an author uses a collection of pictures and illustrations to tell a story or express a concept. The idea of a pictorial essay is not new; the concept has been around for centuries, as works of art such as the Bayeux Tapestry and illuminated manuscripts are examples of pictorial essays. Pictorial essays, however, can also take the form of photographs, paintings, drawings, sketches, and other forms of art which illustrate a narrative idea. The artworks used in a pictorial essay are used to support the story or concept being expressed and may be likened to images used to support a written essay. These works of art are used to generate a clearer picture of the story, create emotion within the reader or viewer, and to better explain the ideas being expressed. A pictorial essay therefore allows an author to convey a narrative concept in a unique and creative way.
