The future of our planet is in grave danger due to the accelerating rate of environmental destruction. The future generations of people will bear the brunt of these consequences and it is essential that immediate and effective steps are taken to protect the environment for their sake. Some measures that can be taken towards this are increasing awareness about the ill effects of environmental degradation, curbing the emissions of harmful greenhouse gases, reducing water and energy waste, banning the indiscriminate felling of trees and expanding the use of renewable sources of energy.
Raising awareness will increase public consciousness about the extreme nature of the current environmental crises and spark a debate, which is badly needed in order to create new laws and regulations to protect the environment. People should be encouraged to use non-conventional sources of energy such as solar and wind power so that dependency on fossil fuels is reduced. Governments should invest in infrastructure that will help meet this goal such as putting up windmills and solar farms in areas that receive ample sunlight and wind. Furthermore, campaigns should be undertaken by governments to promote rainwater harvesting and efficient use of water as water bodies are rapidly depleting due to excessive extraction for human use.
Furthermore, rivers need to be protected and treated as national treasures. Laws should be passed which ban the indiscriminate dumping of industrial and commercial waste into rivers, as this is one of the biggest causes of river pollution and death of aquatic life. Awareness campaigns should also be conducted to discourage people from burning crop residues and using fossil fuel based fertilizers as this increases air pollution. People should be encouraged to grow their own organic food, or purchase locally grown organic food, instead of buying chemical laden food from supermarkets.
Animals and their habitats also need to be protected and steps should be taken to check illegal poaching and wildlife smuggling. Governments should act in coordination with international bodies to ensure that no protected species are being killed and illicit trade is brought to an end.
In conclusion, the urgent need of the hour is to take proactive action to protect the environment for the benefit of future generations. We must act now if we want to ensure that our children and grandchildren can enjoy a healthy, safe and sound environment.
