Ragging has been an extremely hazardous problem not just in our college and universities, but across the globe. It is a type of violence that is mostly initiated by the seniors of the educational institutions to the freshers or newcomers to intimidate and humiliate them. Ragging can take the form of physical or mental abuse. It can include threat, discrimination, humiliation, and harassment and can be spoken or non-verbal. It is more common in Universities and Colleges and this kind of violence can also lead to extreme psychological consequences and serious injuries; even deaths in some cases have been recorded. The problem of ragging has been faced by most of the educational institutes in one form or another and is now considered a criminal offence.
Thus it is utmost important to take strict action and have firm policies in place to ensure that ragging is completely eliminated from educational institutions. An anti-ragging initiative must be introduced by the institutes focusing on strict implementation of the rules and regulations set to ensure punishment is given to those breaking them. all the teachers, faculty members and even students should be made aware of the serious consequences of ragging and everyone must be made to understand that ragging is unacceptable in any form. A friendly and caring University environment should be created where everyone is accepted and respected . The initiatives should also include awareness programs and seminars about ragging and other related issues to ensure that people are educated about the ill effects of ragging.
For effectivr implementation of anti- ragging strategies, active involvement of all authorities and students are very important. Students should take a pledge to not indulge in any kind of ragging activity. The parents of the students should also be taken into confidence and regular meetings should be organised to discuss the progress of anti-ragging policies. An essay writing competition can also be organised with the intention to spread awareness about the effects of ragging and suggest feasible solutions. Various online portals or blogs should also be created to ensure free exchange of ideas on ragging and discussion of possible solutions. With all these combined efforts , it is hoped that ragging will soon be wiped out from the educational institutes and a friendly and healthy environment can be created.
